Visiting the Gallery

How to Find Us

Christ Church Picture Gallery is located within the walls of Christ Church. To visit the Picture Gallery without visiting the rest of the college, enter through Canterbury Gate off Oriel Square (from King Edward Street), only a couple of minutes walk from the High Street. The Custodian at the gate will direct you to the Gallery.

For visitors who wish to see the entire college, the entrance is at Meadow Gate. If you start from there, the Picture Gallery is located in the last quadrangle, known as Canterbury Quad, designed by the British architect James Wyatt (1746 - 1813).

Opening Times

Entrance Charges

Adult - £6.00;  Concession - £3.00;  Free for members of the University and National Art Pass holders.

Please note that the entrance charge to the Picture Gallery is independent of the admission charge to the rest of the college. Visitors who have bought a ticket to visit Christ Church are entitled to the reduced £3.00 Gallery entrance charge.

Annual ticket (unlimited entrance to the Picture Gallery for one year) - £15.00; Concession (Annual Ticket) - £7.50.

Group Visits

In order to avoid over-crowding and possible danger to the paintings on display, group visits are restricted to a maximum of 12 visitors per group and should be pre-booked.  Please give at least one week's notice of your visit. Group leaders are free, but members of your party pay the standard admissions charge (£6 Adults & £3 Concessions).

At present the Picture Gallery is not accessible to wheelchair users, as it is reached by a narrow flight of steps, with further level changes and narrow corners within the listed gallery building.

Blue Badge parking spaces are available at Oriel Square, outside Canterbury Gate, the gallery’s entrance gate.

Descriptions of exhibits are available in large print for those with visual impairments. But please note that due to conservation needs light levels in some parts of the gallery are low.

For further information please contact the Curator of the Picture Gallery.
