Schola Cantorum embarked on an exciting new commission involving a collaboration between composer Toby Young and writer Jennifer Thorp. Toby wrote a set of three madrigals, which aim to explore the lives of people living with mental illness in order to give voice to those affected by the trauma, isolation and stigma of their separation from society. Taking inspiration from cutting edge clinical research at the university, the 'difficult' nature of the subject matter is matched by equally challenging music.
The concert took place in the tranquil surroundings of Christ Church Picture Gallery; in the company of some of the most important Old Master paintings in the country, which deal with equally challenging topics in visual form. The programme also included a rarely heard anthem for double choir by Ivor Gurney, works by Herbert Howells and Kenneth Leighton, and a new piece by Oxford student William Marshall.

This autumn Christ Church Picture Gallery welcomed Prof Dr Arnold Nesselrath from the Vatican Museums to give the Picture Gallery’s 250th anniversary talk.
When General John Guise (1682-1765) bequeathed his collection to Christ Church, the artist whose fame and reputation had not only endured, but had steadily increased, was the Renaissance master Raphael. While Guise’s collection shows many idiosyncrasies, he undeniably shared with his contemporaries a deep admiration for Raphael.
Prof Nesselrath is in charge of the best known works of art in the world –Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and Raphael’s Stanze. He is intimately familiar with Raphael’s oeuvre and one of the leading scholars on the artist. His talk at Christ Church will present new research and discoveries made during the current conservation of Raphael’s frescos.

Lunchtime Recitals in the Picture Gallery

In collaboration with the Bate Music Collection, 18th century music performed on early original instruments to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Guise Bequest. A harpsichord from the Bate Collection has been installed in the Picture Gallery for these recitals.

Saturday 6th June: Richard McKenzie on lute. Music by Porro, Vidal, Sor and various other composers.
Wednesday 10th June: Francis Shepherd on harpsichord. Semper dolens - Exploring Renaissance chromaticism and melancholy. Featuring a selection of music by Sweelinck, Frescobaldi and Gibbons.
Saturday 13th June: The Bate Consort (on viols). English and Italian consort pieces from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including works by William Byrd, John Dowland and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.
Wednesday 17th June: David Gerrard on harpsichord. A selection of Preludes and Fugues from Book II of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, interspersed with other works by Bach and Böhm.
A double-manual harpsichord by Michael Johnson, Dorset, UK, 1986 (Bate Collection number OXFBC9060). This instrument is a modern copy of a 17th century-style instrument of the Ruckers family. Ruckers were harpsichord and virginal makers from the Southern Netherlands, based in Antwerp in the 16th and 17th century. Their influence stretched well into the 18th century, and to the harpsichord revival of the 20th. This instrument has naturals of dark wood and bone-covered sharps, a soundboard decorated with plants and animals, and the interior of the lid with Sylvan scenes. The exterior of the case is painted with a marbling effect; hinges and clasps are of brass.
