Farewell to our Cathedral choir leavers

The annual Valedictory Evensong will be a pre-recorded video service, available via the Cathedral’s online worship page from 9am on Sunday 5 July.

The Valedictory Evensong is a yearly event to thank and bless members of the choir who are moving on, from choristers at the end of year eight, to academical clerks at the end of their third year, to lay clerks moving on to new things.

Although the current circumstances mean that the event cannot take place in the Cathedral itself members of all three choirs have worked together to help produce one of the Cathedral’s most ambitious online services to date.

In spite of the changes, this year’s service continues Christ Church’s excellent musical tradition. The service will feature a psalm, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis written specially for this service by lay clerk leaver, Piers Conor Kennedy, who designed them specifically to be recorded remotely.

The anthem will be an arrangement of Amazing Grace by the Cathedral Organist, Professor Steven Grahl, and will feature solos by all six year eight leavers. In addition to that the service will feature an organ voluntary played by four of the Cathedral’s organists, using five different organs, all playing remotely.

Succentor the Revd Philippa White said: 'We are very proud of all the members of our choir, both children and adults, and it's one of the highlights of the year when we gather at the end of the choir year, to celebrate all that they've achieved and to send those who are leaving on their way with blessing.

‘Although we can't gather to do this in our normal way, this online service will still celebrate the blessing that the choir are to us and give thanks for all of them, especially those who leave us this summer.’
