Aubrey was born in Warwick in 1921, the son of Capt. Charles A. L. French and his wife Idonea Mary Mina Thomas.
He was educated at Wellington where he was a Scholar and Matriculated in 1939. He was awarded a history scholarship.
He enlisted in 1940 in the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) Royal Armoured Corps as a Trooper and served in North Africa where he was killed on June 6th 1942.
He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Column 30 and is commemorated as Aubrey French in SS Peter & Paul Church, Saltwood, Kent.
His name is on the Hythe War Memorial. His parents were living in Hythe.
A history prize at Wellington College is awarded in his name.
