Nigel was the only son of Guy Harold Locock [Knighted 1942] and his wife Esther Mary Eleanor Reade. He had one sister. Sir Guy was a civil servant in the Foreign Office at the time of Nigel’s birth and held various public appointments, finally, becoming Director of the Federation of British Industries from 1932 until 1945.
Nigel was born at 27 Warwick Square, Pimlico, London, on Thursday, April 27th 1911 and baptised at St. Peter's, Eaton Square, on June 27th.
He was educated at Eton and matriculated in 1929. He graduated in 1932 with a 2nd in PPE.
Part of the summer of 1932 was spent travelling in Europe and he returned to London by ship from Marseilles. His parents were living in Eaton Square.
At the outbreak of war he joined the 141st Officer Cadet Training Unit, R.E., at Moore Barracks, Shorncliffe and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on April 23rd 1940.
On May 14th with his unit, he sailed from Liverpool on the City of Benares to Bombay.
It appears that he spent the whole of the war in the Far East, as he died in India on March 13th 1945 from an illness contracted whilst serving in Burma. The notice of his death in The Times, showed his rank as Major and the address of his parents at 48, Murray Road, Wimbledon Common, S.W.19.
He is buried in the Madras War Cemetery, Chennai. India. Plot 8. A. 7 and is commemorated on the MCC Roll of Honour.
