Christ Church is proud to partner with IntoUniversity Oxford South East, a charity based in Blackbird Leys that supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to attain either a university place or another chosen aspiration.

  • Over 60% of the school students that IU work with are on Free School Meals
  • 90% of them come from households with an annual income of less than £25,000, live in social housing or have been in care.
  • In 2017, 70% of IU graduates progressed to higher education, compared to 39% of Year 13s in Oxfordshire and just 7.5% in Blackbird Leys itself.

Christ Church has been supporting IntoUniversity Oxford South East since it opened in 2014, providing not only funding, but opportunities for local young people to visit Christ Church and experience university life at first-hand. This year we hosted a pilot ‘Insight into University’ programme, which was attended by 20 sixth-form students from Oxford and London IU centres. The students visited Christ Church for a day of mini lectures and a question and answer session with a panel of Christ Church staff including speakers from the fields of Engineering, Biology, Economics with Management and Accounting, Music, Modern Foreign Languages, History and PPE. This was followed by workshops on textual analysis and interview practice, including a mock Oxbridge interview.

Christ Church also encourages our students to volunteer with IU and we are delighted that 1/3 of the volunteer mentors this year were Christ Church Students. This often means IntoUniversity Students can visit Christ Church on a 'buddy' trip and bring the Dreaming Spires, and the House, closer to home on the other side of Oxford.
